Garfield public schools were expected to reopen today after 350 teachers yesterday called in sick in an apparent labor protest and forced all schools to close for the day, district officials said.
Giving 4,500 students an unexpected day off, the teachers’ sick-out appeared in connection with slow contract talks between the district and the Garfield Federation of Teachers, although officials said it had yet to even file for state mediation. (more…)
