Christie says he’s an ally of Obama on education reform

Governor Christie Wednesday called himself an ally of President Obama on education reform.

Christie gave a brief statement along with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who is visiting the state Wednesday in a series of appearances. They held a private meeting at Drumthwacket, the governor’s mansion in Princeton, before giving remarks to the press. They did not take questions. (more…)

U.S. education secretary says Newark schools reform could become a national model

NEWARK — Newark occupies center stage in the national education reform movement, and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said if it can turn around its schools, New Jersey’s largest city will set a national standard.

“Newark has this amazing opportunity to break through,” Duncan said today. “The magnitude of that opportunity is staggering. If it can happen in Newark it can happen anywhere. The eyes of the country are here.” (more…)

Obama/Christie on same page when it comes to education

Amid the divisiveness in today’s politics, recent cooperation among leaders of both parties on trying to shape new education policy is encouraging.

Last week, Republican Gov. Chris Christie and Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, jointly announced a $100 million gift to city schools by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. One can never dismiss such a windfall, but the announcement on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was as much show business glitz as it was genuine education policy. The President’s Back to School Speech

President Obama gives his second annual back to school speech at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia, PA, telling students that while government would do its part to help provide access to a quality education, students still needed to take individual responsibility for their future. On education policy, Obama is like Bush

The Education Department kicked off its first ever “Bullying Summit” this week with a speech by Secretary Arne Duncan about the need “to break the cycle of bullying.”
